ASEAN: Ningbo's Third-Largest Trade Partner with Over 20% Growth in 2024
Today, "Made in Ningbo" products are making a comprehensive entry into Southeast Asian markets, as the deepening trade cooperation between Ningbo and ASEAN has become a vivid microcosm of the thriving economic and trade relations between China and ASEAN.ASEAN now stands as Ningbo's third largest trading partner. According to statistics from Ningbo Customs, in 2024, Ningbo's total import and export volume with ASEAN reached 187.69 billion yuan, marking a 20.7% year-on-year increase.Exports amounted to 100.28 billion yuan (up 24.2%) , while imports totaled 87.41 billion yuan (up 16.9%) 一
Over the past decade, bilateral tradebetweenNingbo and ASEAN countries has surged from 53.31 billion yuan in 2014 to 187.69 billion yuan in 2024, achieving an average annual growth rate of 13.4%-5.2 percentage points higher than Ningbo's overall foreign trade growth during the same period. The proportion of ASEAN trade in Ningbo's total foreign trade has risen from 8.3% in 2014 to 13.2% in 2024.
Mechanical and electrical products dominate Ningbo's exports to ASEAN. In 2024, exports of these products reached 53.21 billion yuan, a 27.4% year-on-year increase, with electrical equipment, general machinery, and household appliances growing by 23.6% , 70.7% ,and 18% ,respectively. For imports, mechanical and electrical products and basic organic chemicals ranked as the top two commodities, growing by 24.8% and 33% year-on-year.
Indonesia emerged as the largest trading partner, with bilateral trade totaling 53.81 billion yuan in 2024 (up 34.3% ,followed by Vietnam and Malaysia.Meanwhile, trade withBrunei saw the fastest growth at 52.1%
Mutual benefit lies at theheart of this partnership. What fuels this remarkable performance? Cultural similarities, aligned consumer habits, and a large population base make ASEAN markets a strategic priority for global enterprises amid sluggish global demand. Private enterprises have been key drivers, accounting for 77.7% of Ningbo's ASEAN trade in 2024 (up 22.2% year-on-year), with their share increasing by 1 percentage point.
Recent agricultural exchanges highlight growing complementarity: 6.5 tons of Ningbo-grown grapes were exported to Singapore in January, while Malaysia's premium durians like Musang King and Black Thorn made their debut in Ningbo last August.
Policy support has further deepened cooperation. The full implementation of the Regional ComprehensiveEconomicPartnership (RCEP) and the upgraded 3.0 version of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area have injected vitality into traditional sectors and created opportunities in emerging fields.
Enhanced customs efficiency, including"green channels" for perishables and dedicated inspection facilities for imported fruits, ensures "zero-delay" clearance, reducing trade costs.
From a "Golden Decade" to a"Diamond Decade"and beyond, the future of Ningbo-ASEAN collaboration holds boundless potential.

纵观近十年,宁波与东盟国家双边贸易从2014年的533.1亿元增至2024年的1876.9亿元,年均增长率达 13.4% ,较同期宁波外贸整体增速快5.2个百分点,占宁波外贸总额比重从2014年的 8.3% 提升至2024年的 13.2%_{\circ}
On March 6th, twenty-three international students and faculty from Ningbo University of Technology embarked on a unique cultural excursion in Cicheng, renowned as the"First Ancient County of Jiangnan." They participated in an immersive experience titled"Fragrant Integrity: A Hanfu Cultural Journey in Search of Scents", blending traditional ethics with hands-on heritage activities.

This initiative, a collaboration between Cicheng Town and various universities around Ningbo, is an innovative cultural exchange effort. By integrating integrity education with the traditional craft ofincensemaking, the event sought to showcase China's achievements in ethical governance, intangible cultural heritage, and rural revitalization while fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Embracing "Guochao": A Cultural Journey into "Fragrant Integrity"
At Qingfeng Garden, one of China's first national integrity education bases, participants explored historical relics guided by a docent. They examined inscribed couplets, stone carvings, plaques, and ancient pathways and engaged with exhibits on Cicheng's renowned upright officials, the Hundred Honorable Officials genealogy, the documentary Chang'an's 30,000 Miles, Cicheng's 1,000 Years, "the Ningbo Wall of Integrity", and "Facing the Wind," a sculptural portrayal of ancient virtuous officials. These encounters offered an immersive insight into China's deep-rooted culture of integrity.
"This is the main hall-Qinmin Hall," the guide explained. Standing before an ancient bronze mirror, Nada from Morocco marveled, "This is incredible! It feels like I'm talking with people from ancient China."
The journey continued to Mao'ao Village, named one of"China's Most Beautiful Leisure Villages." The incense-making experience opened with a guqin performance of Liang Xiao Yin by Tang Qiujia, founder of Fanxing. From the ritual handwashing and purification ceremonies upon entry to meditative incense appreciation and hands-on incense crafting, the international guests were fully immersed in the art of Chinese fragrance culture. Under the guidance of Hou Nana, an eighth-generation inheritor of the traditional peony incense-making craft, they experiencedfirsthand thedepth and eleganceof China'sincense traditions.
"This incense-making experience was incredible!" exclaimed Moroccan twin sisters Imane and Oumayma."The peony fragrance is wonderful—I think we've fallen in love with Chinese incense culture!"
In recent years, as China's rural revitalization strategy has gainedmomentum,Mao'aoVillagehasleverageditsnatural beauty and cultural heritage to develop a"beauty economy." Byintroducingboutiquecultural tourisminitiativessuch as Wushe Cultural Retreat, Jushandi, and Fanxing Healing Space, thevillagehascarvedouta distinctivepathto prosperity. Tang Qiujia, who also serves as the rotating "Village Director for United Front Initiatives,"has played a key role in promoting intangible cultural heritage abroad. Through programs like rural entrepreneurship training and public meditation camps, she has continuously strengthened Mao'ao Village's cultural influence and global appeal.
A representative from the Cicheng Town Youth League Committee remarked that "this event was more than just a cultural discovery journey for university faculty and students-it was a vital step in deepening cross-cultural exchange. Moving forward, we will continue using traditional culture as a bridge, strengthening collaborations with universities to share China's rich heritage and foster international connections."

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has long been committed to fostering a campus culture that celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion. One of the most vibrant and uplifting events contributing to this mission is the annual Campus Run in Colour, a special edition of the weekly Campus Run that brings together students, staff, and the broader Ningbo community in a joyful celebration of togetherness each March.
Every Saturday, UNNC's Campus Run, spearheaded by Michaela Seserman, Ash Wang, and a dedicated team of student and community volunteers, as well as support from the Sports Department's Wolf Yang, provides an open platform for individuals of all abilities to take part, whether as runners or supporters. More than just a fitness initiative, it hasbecome a socialevent where people can connect and be part of a welcoming environment. Over the years, the event has extended beyond theuniversity's boundaries, drawing in local residents who appreciate the opportunity to participate in an inclusive activity.

Campus Run in Colour serves as a key event during UNNC's Equity,Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)Week,an initiative organised by the EDI Committee in collaboration withtheSportsDepartment.Theeventaddsavisually strikingelementtotheusualrun, reinforcingthemes ofparticipation and respect.Thankstothe dedication of Manning Xu, UNNC's EDI Officer, the entire EDI Week is carefully curatedtoinclude a varietyof activitiesthatpromote understanding and celebrate diversity.Running alongside International Women's Day on 8 March, EDI Week (scheduled from 3 - 9 March 2025) provides an opportunity for the university to highlight the contributions ofindividuals from all backgroundswhilereinforcingtheinstitution'scommitment to fostering an equitable space for all.
The very first Campus Run in Colour took place in the spring of 2021.Though it started as a small-scale event open only to the UNNC community, it made a big impact. Special guests from the LemonTree Foundation, an organisation dedicated to supporting individuals with various disabilities, participated in the event, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Building on the success of the first event, the second edition in 2022 saw even greater engagement. The LemonTree Foundation hosted a boothfeaturing children'sperformances and a saleof baked goods made by members of the foundation. For the first time, the Campus Run team also organised a bake sale, with all proceeds going to support LemonTree. The overwhelming response and generosity ofthe UNNC community ensured another successful event.Since then, Campus Run in Colour has become a cherished annual tradition at UNNC. Each year, the event continues to evolve, with LemonTree Foundation remaining a key partner. Their booth has expanded to include not just baked goods but also beautiful handcrafted jewellery and other unique items, each telling a story of resilience and creativity. The Campus Run team has also continued its fundraising bake sale, with the 2025 edition raising an impressive 1,567 RMB in support of LemonTree's mission.
Colour Us Community

The evolving nature of Campus Run in Colour highlights its significance not just within UNNC but also in the broader Ningbo community. While initially a university-driven initiative, the event has gradually attracted local residents who see value in its open and supportive atmosphere. The emphasis on inclusion extends beyond the university, fostering a sense of community that bridges different backgrounds and experiences. Campus Run in Colour has developed into a meaningful event where individuals, regardless of their affiliation with the university, can take part in an activity that promotes both social engagement and physical well-being. Whether as runners, volunteers, or supporters, participants contribute to a shared experience that underscores thebroaderimportance of community-driven initiatives in fostering a more connected and inclusive society.

Indonesia Unveiled:

Beyond the Archipelago's Hidden Treasures

The Dragon and the Digital Age
On the volcanic island of Java, morning mist clings to Mount Bromo as devotees toss offerings into its smouldering crater. Meanwhile,inJakarta'sbusiness district, a young entrepreneur orders lunch via Gojek while negotiating a global deal. This is Indonesia:a nationwhere ancient rituals coexist with a hyperconnected generation racing toward the future.
For many, Indonesia begins and ends with Bali-a paradise of rice terraces and surf breaks. But beyond the postcardperfect vistas lies a country of staggering complexity. Straddling the equator, this 17,000-island archipelago is home to 270 million people, 700 languages, and a cultural tapestry of Hindu epics, Islamic traditions, and centuries of trade. As China's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is more than a vacation spot - it's a mirror reflecting shared histories, ambitions, and challenges.
WhispersoftheAncients
In Java's heart, the mist-cloaked ruins of Borobudur stand as silent sentinels.Carvedwithstoriesof enlightenment, their stones are warmed by pilgrims' hands and weathered by monsoons. Here, history isn't a museum relic - it's a grandmother's lullaby, passed down through generations. Centuries ago, Zheng He's treasure ships docked in Java, bringing silks and scholars. Today, that bond lives in the crackle of firecrackers during Lunar New Year, in the swirl of batik patterns inspired by Chinese porcelain, and in the quiet pride of a street vendor serving bakmie noodles - a recipe older than your greatgrandfather's stories.
ButIndonesia's soul is restless. In Sulawesi, grief becomes a celebration:families dancefor weeks, slaughtering buffalo to escort loved ones to the afterlife. "We laugh, we cry, we feast until dawn," says a Toraja elder. "Why mourn death when it's just another journey?"
Silicon and Struggle
Jakarta's skyline blazes with ambitions. Neon signs scream"TikTok Shop!"while motorbikes swarm like fireflies. In cramped warungs (street stalls), young adults trade Bitcoin over es the manis (sweet iced tea). This is a generation hungry for more - more WiFi, more wattage, more life.
Gojek drivers, heroes of the gig economy, weave through traffic with superhero grit. They're not just delivering groceries; they're fueling dreams. Many of them could grin while saying "this motorbike paid for my degree." But progress tastes bittersweet. In Sulawesi's nickel mines-the backbone of your smartphone battery - rivers run red with sediment, and farmers whisper of stolen land.
FeastofMemories
Food here is a lovelanguage, a bridge between worlds. In Padang, West Sumatra, rendang isn't just a dish -it's alchemy. Beef simmers for hours in coconut milk, ginger, and cinnamon, caramelising into a dark, velvety masterpiece.Locals say the longer it cooks, the deeper the love - a metaphor for a culture that prizes patience and kinship.
Indonesia's culinary soul thrives on fusion. Jakarta's Glodok Chinatown sizzles with lumpia (spring rolls), a legacy of Hokkien migrants. Nearby, bakso meatball soupunites everyone with garlic-staranise broth. In Java, nasi campur (mixed rice) layers spicy sambal, fried egg, peanut satay, and crispy shallotsa mosaic of traditions. For the daring, Papua's roasted sago grubs crunch alongside Bali's babi gulingturmeric-crisped suckling pig for ceremonies. And let's talk about my beloved - coffee. Java's plantations, once symbols of colonial greed, nowinspire a new generation. In Bandung, kopi joss—charcoal-black coffee with a burning ember dropped in—redefines tradition with a rebellious twist. Each dish and sip reflects Indonesia's rich, layered identity.

WhentheEarthCries
Indonesias naturalbeautyis a paradoxteeming with life yet imperilled by progress. In RajaAmpat,West Papua, technicolour fish dart through coral labyrinths, and manta rays glide like underwater ghosts. This "species factory"holds 1,700 fish species and 75% of Earth's coral varieties, but rising temperatures have bleached 30% of reefs in a decade, endangering 3 million livelihoods. Sumatra's jungles, home to critically endangered orangutans, vanish into palm oil plantations.Kalimantan's air chokes with toxic haze from annual peatland fires. Jakarta, sinking 25cm yearly (Earth's fastest rate), faces apocalyptic floods; half the city drowns below sea level, with 95% of North Jakarta projected to submerge by 2050.
The government's 35$ billion gamble? Relocating the capital to Nusantara, Borneo's "forest smart city," promising green skyscrapers and renewable energy.Activists decry rainforest destruction and Indigenous displacement for this"sustainable" utopia. Komodo dragons, Earth's last living dinosaurs, stalk Rinca Island, ancient as time. Yet warming nests skew their sex ratios toward extinctionmales only. They mirror Indonesia itself: a primordial force caught between preservation and peril.

Why Indonesia Matters?
This is not a country you visit. It's one you feel - in the ache of your muscles after a volcano hike, in the sting of chili on your lips, in the haunting gaze of a Komodo dragon. It's a mirror held to our shared future: Can we honour tradition while chasing tomorrow? Can we build without breaking? As the Javanese say, "Ngluruk tanpa bala, menang tanpa ngasorake" (Move forward without an army, win without humiliation). Indonesia's answer lies in its chaos, its contradictions, its unyielding heartbeat.

Ningbo's Role in Bilateral Ties
China and Indonesia share a multifaceted and robust economic relationship that has deep historical roots and has evolved considerably over time.
Bilateral ties have moved from ancient trade and cultural exchanges to modern trade, investment, and strategic economic partnerships that underpin each nation's developmental policies. Today, China is not only Indonesia's largest trading partner but also a primary source of foreign investment, serving as a critical engine of Indonesia's economicgrowth andindustrial transformation.Bilateral trade has continued to grow steadily, with recent data showing that tradebetween thetwo countries reached US139.42billion in2023-\mathtt{a}$ figure that reflects the critical strategic importance of this relationship for both nations The co-operation extends into multiple areas, including infrastructure development, renewable energy, advanced
manufacturing, and digital transformation, cementing the dynamic interplay between China's technological prowess and Indonesia's abundant natural resources.
{>} StrategicEconomic Partnerships andTrade Agreements
Both China and Indonesia benefitfromframeworks that facilitate seamless trade and investment, notably the ChinaASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The free trade agreements have reduced tariffs to nearly zero on hundreds of products, promoting an environment where goods, raw materials, and manufactured products flow
with fewer restrictions. Moreover, co-operation is further enhanced due to strategic bilateral memoranda of understanding and partnership agreements that target infrastructure development, digital technology, green energy, and maritime initiatives. These institutional arrangements not only boost bilateral economic activity but also help both countries align their policies with regional and global standards, creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic development. The strategic commitments also reflect the nations' desire to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes while nurturing bilateral and multilateral engagements throughinitiativessuchasChina'sBeltandRoad Initiative (BRI). Indonesia continues to register impressive economic transformationsfueled by strong Chinese investments and trade flows. With China serving as Indonesia's largest export destination and top source ofimports, the bilateral connection is vital to Indonesia's supply chains, which span vital commodities such as metals, mineral resources, and agricultural products. Chinese investments in sectors like renewable energy, mining, infrastructure, electronics, and automotive have kept Indonesia at the forefront of industrial growth in Southeast Asia.
Investment inInfrastructure and Industrial Parks
Infrastructure development stands out as a key pillar of the China-Indonesia business nexus, and Chinese companies have played major roles in spearheading projects such as highways, ports, railways, and industrial parks. A landmark project is the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, which exemplified China's expertise in exporting advanced infrastructure and engineering solutions to Indonesia.Beyond transportation, industrial parks such as the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park(IMIP)showcase the synergybetween Chinese capital and Indonesia's resource-driven development strategies. These parks not onlyfacilitate advanced processing activities —particularly in the nickel industry — but also help add significant value to Indonesia's raw mineral exports by integrating downstream manufacturing that is essential for the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy industries.

RenewableEnergyandDigitalEconomyInitiatives
Environmental sustainability and the digital economy are emerging as strategic sectors in bilateral co-operation. China's advancements in renewable energy technologies and its robust digital infrastructure are now playing key roles in supporting Indonesia's transition toward a greener and more technologically advanced economy. In 2024,initiatives such as the establishment of the Indonesia-China Center for Ocean and Climate (ICCOC) were launched tofoster researchin environmental sustainability and renewable energy applications, supporting Indonesia's green development agenda.Simultaneously, efforts to developIndonesia's artificial intelligence (Al) ecosystem have been bolstered by highlevel meetings between Indonesian and Chinese offcials, reflecting a shared vision for digitized public services, smart manufacturing, and enhanced data governance.

BusinessConnectionsBetweenNingboandIndonesia
Ningbo has emerged as a strategic focal point for fostering trade and investment with Indonesia, capitalizing on its strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and robust business environment. Ningbo-based companies have become prominent players in exporting products, investing in local industries, and establishing joint ventures with Indonesian counterparts. For example, Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend (CBL) stands out as a leading Chinese EV battery company that has committed to investing \mathtt{U S S420} million in Indonesia's nickel mining and downstream processing sectors, reinforcing Indonesias role as a critical node in the global EV supply chain. The collaboration between Posco and Ningbo Liqin in building a nickel processing plant in Sulawesi further underscores the high-level engagement of Ningbo enterprises in Indonesias industrial development. These companies benefit from Indonesias strategic location along key maritime routes and its vast consumer market, thereby enhancing their operational efficiency and broadening their market reach.
Despite the overall positive environment, Chinese companies, including those from Ningbo, must adapt to Indonesias unique regulatory and cultural landscape. Indonesias regulatory framework can be labyrinthine, with evolving laws and bureaucratic processes that occasionally create hurdles for foreign investors. Thorough legal due diligence and forming local strategic partnerships have emerged as best practices for overcoming these challenges. However, with ongoing bilateral discussions, continued government support, and sustained corporate commitment, any challenges can be effectively managed to ensure long-term business success.

Conclusion
The trade and investmentrelationship between ninaanc Indonesia continues to deepen, and Ningbo plays a crucial rolein this expanding economic partnership. With strong governmental backing, advanced tchnological expertise, androbust investment capabilities,Ningbo-based companies have positioned themselves as key stakeholders in Indonesia's industrial and economic growth. While regulatory and trade balance challenges persist, the overall trajectory of the China-Indonesia economicrelationshipremainspositive, presenting ampleopportunitiesformutually beneficial collaborationintradeinfrastructure, renewableenrgy, anddigital transformation.

注意事项—1.着装得体:在参观寺庙及其他宗教场所时,务必注意遮盖肩膀和膝盖,以示尊重;
2.使用右手:递接物品时,请使用右手。在印度尼西亚文化中,左手被视为不洁之手,使用左手递接物品被认为是不礼貌的行为;
禁忌事项—1.避免公共场合亲密行为:在诸如寺庙、宗教场所等较保守的区域,应避免在公共场合做出过于亲密的举动,保持言行得体;

When I was veryyoung, Ilearntthat asociating a groupof people with a particular trait or skill can be a dangerous thing to do. As a nine-year-old, watching Jackie Chan's Rush Hour trilogy had me convinced that all Chinese people knew and practised martial arts. Growing up meant I swiftly learnt I was incorrect about a number of things like that. Cognitive science suggests that thebrainconstantly categorises ormakes associations asittakesininformationin ordertomakesenseof theworld aroundit. If that's the case, perhaps my friendsfrom Indonesia will then forgive me for (very quietly) believing all Indonesians are master chefs in their own right. They tolerate my pleas for "green coconutty things" (a name that's become a gentle inside joke) or, for the more educated among you, dadar gulung. Often described as an Indonesian coconut pancake, dadar gulung is a popular snack in Indonesia, especially in Java. In Indonesian, dadar literally means "omelette" or "pancake", while gulung means "to roll". The pancake usually has a green colour, which is acquired from daun suji or pandan leaves —hence my own name of"green coconutty things". Still, Rose Andriani is no stranger to these pleas, noris she a stranger to the kitchen, a space in which she creates both home and friendship, and uses it as a means to weave together tradition, modern life, and personal growth.
Hailing from Indonesia and having lived in Ningbo since 2018, Rose embraces the challenges and joys that come with balancing her responsibilities at home, pursuing her passions, and maintaining strong ties to her Indonesian roots. For Rose, joy is found in the simple yet meaningful moments — spending time with loved ones, helping others, and working from home. These daily activities form the foundation of her fulfilment, allowing her to stay connected with what truly matters. However, like many, Rose faces the challenge of maintaining balance in her life. Jugglingfamily responsibilities with personal aspirations requires discipline and careful time management."It's about setting realistic goals and ensuring that I dedicate quality time toboth family and my passions,"she explains. Through this structured approach, she has found harmony between duty and personal fulfilment.

Cultural Pride
Rose sees herself as a bridge between tradition and modern perspectives. This role is particularly meaningful given her experiences inbothIndonesia and China - two nations rich in history, culture, and tradition. While each country has its unique differences, she cherishes the warmth and hospitality they share. Staying connected with both worldsis a priority for her, whether through regular visits or maintaining close relationships with friends in both places. Her deep appreciation for cultural heritage extends beyond her own experiences; shehopes toleave a lasting impact onher community."Iwanttoberemembered assomeonewhoencouragedcultural pride," she says. More than anything, shewantstopassonalegacy of kindnessand inspiration-values that have shaped her journey.
Personal growth is an ongoing journey, and for Rose, recentyearshavebrought significant transformation. She has developed a stronger sense of selfawareness and gratitude, embracing change with an open heart. "I now prioritise my inner peace," she shares. This shift in mindset has allowed her to navigate life with greater resilience and purpose. When faced with challenges, Rose finds strength in her faith, family, and positive influences. Surrounding herself with uplifting people and maintainingahopeful outlookhelpher move through difficult times with grace. It's this steadfastmindset thathas helped her stay grounded and motivated.
Beyondherroleas amotherandcultural bridge,Rose is known among her friends for her talent in cooking and baking. Her love for the culinary arts is deeply rooted in family traditions."My first dish was beef rendang and coconut cake,"she recalls."The taste wasn't bad at all!" For Rose, cooking is more than just preparing meals -- it's a way of bringing people together. "My favourite part is sharing the final dish with loved ones," she says. "Food has a special way of creating connections."Her Indonesian heritage plays a significant role in her culinary creations, inspiring her to use rich flavours, aromatic spices, and traditional techniques. At the core of everything Rose does is a desire to find happiness in life's simple pleasures. Whether it's cooking a meal, spendingquality time with family, or helping others, she finds fulfilment in moments of connection and kindness.
RoseAndriani's storyis a testament to the beauty of embracing multiple cultures, balancing responsibilities with passion, and finding strength infaith and family. As she continues to navigate life in Ningbo while staying deeply connected toher Indonesian roots, she exemplifies cultural pride, resilience, and love.

The word for homeland in Bahasa Indonesia is'Tanah Air'.
'Tanah' as in ground and'air' as in water.
As if I am a seed in a garden.
But the word, the letters, a-i-r, Has another meaning.
It is also air, the oxygen I breathe. A seed from a tree not of this garden,
I was raised on a different kind of air.
But my roots are here in this garden.
As they have always been and as they will always be. Perhaps one day my fruits and leaves
Will see another garden, take in different air.
But my roots will remain here.
In my homeland, di tanah airku.
Tanah Air"
“Tanah”
“Air”
Tanah Airku (My Motherland)
